With so many apps on the market, it’s difficult to know which ones are actually worth your time. I’m sure most of us have downloaded something, only to be disappointed with the results.
Smashbomb is an app made for fans of film, TV, gaming, podcasts, books and more. I’ll be walking you through the film side of things, but most of what I’m about to show you is applicable for whatever you’re wanting to review and discover. It’s only been around since 2017, so it’s a fairly recent addition.
I’ve been using the app for about a week now, after uploading the reviews from my blog onto the app. It’s nice having the ability to host my reviews elsewhere, and connect with other film fans. It’s available on both iOS and Android too.
When you set up a profile, here’s what it looks like:
This is where everyone learns more about you, so it’s good to keep it as detailed as possible. You can choose up to 6 interests, which I know is hard for a film fan, but needs must! You can also add your social links and a bio (mine’s offscreen as it’s very long…)
It also shows you how many reviews you’ve added, your average score, and how many ‘kudos points’ you’ve currently earned. These are tough to sum up in a few sentences, so I’ll let Smashbomb explain what kudos points are.
Adding A Review
Adding a review is super easy and user-friendly. Simply click on the plus button in the middle of your toolbar, and then the list in the first image will pop up. Then you select review and choose your category, in my case, it’s ‘movies’.
Then you search for the film you’d like to review, so I went for Brightburn as an example (review coming really soon, on that note!). Finally, select ‘next’ and you’ll be able to input all your information.
What I love about this feature in particular is the fact you can break it down into ‘what’s good’ and ‘what’s bad’, which allows users to easily see the pros and cons when they’re scrolling through. The ability to add a spoiler warning is also nice.
You can also import reviews if you’re hosting them elsewhere, saving you the need to copy and paste everything you’ve written. Bonus points for that.
Smashbomb are currently working on integrating more sites, so if you don’t see what you want here, it might be coming in future. So stay tuned!
Discover – Trending Topics
One of my favourite sections is ‘Discover’, where you can see the most popular things from other users. There’s all sorts on here: films, podcasts, TV, books and apps to name a few. But you can scroll through lots of different categories.
If you’d like to know more about something, simply click to view ratings, images, and more information.
Side note: I really love this series. Maybe I should stick a review on here?
We all love freebies, and Smashbomb is full of them!
Users can win books, films, merchandise and more by checking the giveaways section of the app. It’s easy to find, just look for the present icon on the toolbar. If you do win anything, you’re required to write a review, which I think is perfectly reasonable. I’d write one anyway.
All you need to do is enter is fill in your details, and click enter. No questions or surveys or hidden nonsense. I’m here for that.
Finally – badges! These are a fun little thing that makes Smashbomb fun and competitive. The more you do on the app, the more badges you earn.
Maybe one day I’ll reach the coveted ‘Movie Legend’ badge? Only time will tell!
So there you have it, a quick and easy guide to Smashbomb! I’m really having fun with this and I’d like to thank the app for inviting me to join, I’m happy to be a part of it.
If you want to connect with me on the app, just search for @lucygthollywood and say hello!
